Controversial Sculpture of Trump on a Cross: 'Saint or Sinner' Displayed in Switzerland (2025)

A bold and controversial sculpture has sparked curiosity and debate in Switzerland, leaving many with a thought-provoking question: Is this art a sign of democracy or a step too far?

The sculpture, titled "Saint or Sinner," depicts none other than former US President Donald Trump, but in an unusual and thought-provoking context. Created by British artist Mason Storm, the piece showcases Trump in prison attire, his eyes closed, and his body positioned on a white cross, evoking a powerful image that could be interpreted as a crucifixion or even an execution.

Since its display in Basel, Switzerland, the artwork has attracted a significant audience, with electronic counters recording over 3,000 people passing by in a single day. The gallery owner, Konrad Breznik, described the sculpture as "scary realistic," highlighting the intricate details that bring it to life.

"When you get up close, you can see every wrinkle, the skin is so realistic... it's truly eerie," Breznik told AFP.

The initial plan was to showcase the piece at the Basel central train station, but the gallery opted for a less crowded location, ultimately choosing a pedestrian walkway known as Basler Kunstmeile. This decision seems to have paid off, as the artwork has become a focal point for discussion and reflection.

Many passersby have stopped to admire the sculpture, with some even smiling at the unique portrayal. However, the question remains: Is this a sign of democracy, as one observer suggested, or does it cross a line?

"It's a sign that we have democracy... that we are allowed to show things like this," said Marit, a Norwegian resident of Basel. When asked about the possibility of displaying the artwork in the United States, she expressed doubt, adding, "I don't think so, no."

Breznik, the gallery owner, offered an intriguing perspective, suggesting that Trump himself might appreciate the piece. "I absolutely think Mr. Trump could see himself in the role of a modern Jesus," he said. "He's convinced he's doing the right thing."

Mason Storm, the anonymous artist behind this provocative work, is known for his hyper-realistic and unconventional sculptures and canvases. Often compared to the renowned Banksy, Storm's art challenges societal hypocrisies, leaving viewers with much to ponder.

Interestingly, the sculpture was acquired by a collector even before its display in Basel. The collector, described as an "internationally renowned figure living in Europe," wishes to remain anonymous, according to the gallery.

This artwork raises questions about the boundaries of artistic expression and the role of art in society. Is it a powerful statement or a controversial choice? What do you think? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!
